Visible particles are one of the few water complaints where looking closely narrows the cause immediately. Colour, texture and which tap it comes from do most of the diagnostic work.
First, rule out the common non-problem: if it is cloudy rather than gritty and clears from the bottom up, that is dissolved air and there is nothing there to filter.
White or grey flakes
Most often scale shed from the water heater. Calcium and magnesium come out of solution when heated and deposit on the tank and elements; pieces eventually break loose.
The tells: hot side only, flakes rather than grains, and they crush easily.
If that is the finding, the flakes are a symptom of what scale is doing to the heater, and the heater is losing efficiency well before it loses parts.
Tiny black specks
Usually rubber, from degraded washers, gaskets, O-rings or a failing supply hose.
The test is tactile: press one. Rubber is soft and squashes; mineral particles are gritty and crumble. If it is rubber, the source is usually close by — check the flexible supply hoses under sinks and behind the washing machine, since a failing one is a leak waiting to happen as well as a source of specks.
Worth knowing that chloraminated water is harder on some rubber compounds than free chlorine is, so a house that switched supply chemistry may see this before a neighbour on a different system does.
Black specks can also be carbon fines from a new filter cartridge, which is normal briefly after a change and should flush out.
Orange or rust-coloured grit
Iron, either arriving from the source or produced by corroding galvanised pipe.
Distinguishing them: if it is worse at first draw and clears with flushing, the pipe is a strong candidate. If it is constant, the source is more likely. If it appears suddenly across the neighbourhood, it is probably disturbed sediment in the distribution main after a break or a hydrant flush — that one resolves on its own.
Iron is common in local groundwater — USGS finds 70% of Mobile County and 76% of Baldwin County sites above the secondary standard — and we do not install dedicated iron treatment, so if that is the answer we will say so and point you on.
Fine sand or silt on a well
Points at the well itself: a failing screen, a pump set too low, or drawdown pulling material in. That is well contractor territory rather than treatment territory, and running a pump on sandy water damages it.
A sediment filter here treats the symptom while the pump wears out.
Why we do not sell you a filter for this
Straight answer: dedicated particle-straining equipment is not something we install.
It is also, in most of the cases above, the wrong purchase. Particles are being produced by something — a scaling heater, a corroding pipe, a failing well screen — and a cartridge downstream catches the evidence while the underlying failure keeps progressing out of sight. The cartridge cost becomes a recurring rent on an unsolved problem.
The thing worth spending on is the cause. A heater shedding scale, galvanised pipe reaching the end of its life, or a well pulling sand are each somebody's work — a plumber's or a well contractor's — and none of them are fixed by straining the result.
