Acid Neutralizer / pH Correction

An acid neutralizer is a tank of calcite — crushed calcium carbonate — that low-pH water dissolves as it passes through, raising itself toward neutral by eating the very media designed to feed it. The tank simply gets topped up as the calcite depletes.

Left uncorrected, acidic water works on your plumbing instead: it dissolves copper from the inside, which is what the blue-green staining around drains actually is, and pinhole leaks follow years later where the wall thinned. Treating the symptom — repiping, restaining — without correcting pH just restarts the clock.
